A Walk in a Jeju Village: Fall in Hangyeong-myeon (Part 2)
별점(5점만점에 5점)
Previously in 〈A Walk in a Jeju Village, Fall in Hangyeong-myeon! (Part 1)>, if you walked through the forests and oreum volcanic cones and felt the calm autumn season while drinking refreshing tea, (Part 2) will guide you to places that will fatten your body and mind. Small bookstores and book cafés that are perfect for the reading season and bakeries that are pleasant just to see their deliciously baked looks are the next destinations. Regardless of which region you introduce, bookstores and bakeries cannot be left out, as a book you find on a trip may change the direction of your life, and a piece of delicious bread you accidentally tasted may become the reason for your next trip. In fact, even without attaching such a grand reason, wouldn't it be clear that existence itself is a place of happiness? Especially in autumn, like these days, it will be more so.

① Untitled Bookshop
The only bookstore in Hangyeong-myeon. Thanks to the old local bakery “Yumyeong (Famous) Confectionery” located downstairs, it might have been given the fun name of “Mumyeong (Untitled) Bookshop.” Books are classified into categories of poetry, love, politics, and nature, and it is not just a space for selling books, but it is operated with the feeling of a cultural salon that holds various book reading gatherings and reading sessions. In winter, it holds four weeks of independent publishing classes, and the results are introduced and sold here at the beginning of the following year. At Untitled Bookshop, they take pictures of books that meet their companions and post them on Instagram (@untitledbookshop). Anyone following along with this special experience would want to join the Journey of Untitled Books.
② Youram with Books
A well-known book café in Jeju, “Youram with Books,” has been steadily in place for 5 years. Although the space is not very large, it is a duplex structure, so it is fun to take out hidden books to read. There are more than 15,000 books available to cover all ages, including essays, novels, comic books, and picture books. In fact, during the coverage, a variety of customers came and left, from young tourists who visited alone to parents who came with their children and local residents. It does not operate a separate reading program and is literally playing the role of a book café where you can read books with a cup of coffee at any time. It can accommodate about ten teams at a time, but as the number of books increases, they are planning to move to a more spacious space within the year. The location has not been determined yet, but it will probably move within Hangyeong-myeon. What's new in the bookstore is available on Instagram (@youram_with_books).
① Hi, Guum
Gosan-ri, a neighborhood that still feels old as if it's on a drama set. When you open the door of a white building that stands out in a quiet alley, a couple that gives a good impression will greet you. The male owner studied architecture design and the female owner had a hobby of baking said they liked this quiet neighborhood in Hangyeong-myeon, so they settled here. Just like the name of the café “Hi, Guum,” you can taste various types of baked sweets such as cannelés, egg tarts, rice s'mores cookies, and scones. It uses healthy ingredients such as domestic rice flour, non-antibiotic fertilized eggs, and organic wheat flour, and all the jams used in scones and syrups used in drinks are made by hand. Cheesecakes and castellas can be pre-ordered in whole sizes, so please refer to its Instagram page (@hi.guum) for more information.
② Episode Bakery Café
The red brick building standing tall by the wide road was bigger than expected, so it was a little surprising. However, you can feel the warm and friendly atmosphere unique to a local bakery when you step inside. Familiar bread such as sweet red bean bread, garlic baguette, and streusel are on display, and you can enjoy the bread at one of the several tables inside the spacious café. Due to the nature of its location, it is a true local bakery that is usually visited by local residents rather than tourists and travelers, and according to the customs of Jeju Island, there are quite a few customers that visit looking for bread to place on tables for their ancestral rites. Different kinds of bread are prepared every day, including campagnes and pretzels on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and hope you try the most popular crucian-shaped dageumbari (Sawedged Perch) bread. ③ All Year Round Jeju
Opened a year ago in Yongsu-ri, Hangyeong-myeon, a quiet village, “All Year Round Jeju” is a space that contains the cycle of the four seasons. The main desserts are various types of cakes made at the store without synthetic preservatives and additives. There are always four or five types of cake prepared, but the Mugwort Injeolmi Gâteau au Chocolat and Fig Pistachio Tea Cake are fixed as signature items on the menu, and cakes made with the best seasonal fruits of that month are added to the menu. You can taste the Fig Chestnut Choux Cream and Jeju Raw Fig Tart since it is autumn right now. Also, they choose coffee beans that match the weather and season.
In addition to basic coffee, lattes with black sesame and beet are prepared under the cute names of “Hyunmuam (basalt)” and “Dongbaek (camellia),” respectively. In particular, red beets, grown by the owner's father, are also processed and sold into freeze-dried chips and powder. If you are curious about the next season of “All Year Round Jeju,” take a look at the menu items introduced on its Instagram (@all.year.round.jeju).
