Udo Island gets its name from its shape, said to resemble a cow, and has previously been called by other cow-related names, So-seom or Shwe-seom. With its gentle slopes, fertile land, abundant fishing grounds, and 8 special “must-see” sights, it attracts around 2 million visitors annually, making it the most popular of Jeju’s many satellite islands.
Ferries to Udo Island depart from both Seongsan Port and Jongdal Port and take about 15 from either departure point. The island is 3.8 km, with about 17 km of coastline. Walking nonstop, the island could be traversed in about 3–4 hours, but most tourists choose to explore the main attractions by bicycle or mini electric car.
It generally takes about 3-4 hours to visit one or two of the most popular spots, such as Geommeolle Beach, Udobong, Udo Sanho Beach (also known as Seobinbaeksa or Hongjodangoe Beach), and Hagosudong Beach, including some time spent at a nice café or restaurant afterwards. As the ferry may be canceled is case of inclement weather, checking weather forecasts is essential when planning a trip to Udo Island.

Udo Sanho Beach is known for its dazzling white sand, formed of calcium carbonate from red algae that harden and break down. This type of red algae beach is quite rare worldwide, and therefore protected.
Hagosudong Beach is another popular attraction, famous for its wide, sandy shore and the gorgeous color of its waters. Other options include the gently sloping path around Cheonjin-dong and the scenic coastal paths of Geommeolle, or a climb up Udobong Peak to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire island. Beyond the stunning natural scenery, Udo Island is also full of activities certain to add some extra fun to your trip, such as sea fishing, cycling, and submarine excursions or cruises.

※ If you’re planning a visit, please note that the island’s typical restrictions on vehicle traffic will be partially lifted for one year starting August 2025, allowing 16-passenger charter buses, eco-friendly rentals such as electric and hydrogen cars, and rental two-wheelers, motorcycles, and personal mobility devices (PM) to operate freely during this period.
