Swimming with pets is restricted to designated areas of the beach during open season. Additionally, please note that access for pets may be restricted at any time in response to complaints from other visitors or on-site conditions.
Gimnyeong Beach, located in Gimnyeong Village, is named for its shape as seen from the air, forming the Chinese character for “flat” (平), while “Seonsegi” refers to a small fortress built there to defend against foreign invasions. The beach was formed as sand accumulated over top massive slabs of volcanic rock. The sound of the waves crashing ceaselessly onto the white sands offers a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation, while the cobalt-blue sea is a stunning example of Jeju’s natural beauty.
The beach covers a total area of 49,000㎡, with a sandy stretch 200 meters long and 120 meters wide and an average depth of 1–2 meters. The soft sand and clear blue waters are surrounded by dramatic cliffs, creating a breathtaking vista.
As one of Jeju’s most popular beaches, it is equipped with a number of convenient facilities such as a campground, parking lot, restrooms, changing rooms, and showers. This is also a perfect spot to enjoy rock fishing for fish such as rock bream and parrotfish, as well as activities such as camping, windsurfing, and waterskiing.
While walking along the beach, you may observe some wind turbines. Due to its unique terrain, Gimnyeong Beach is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark and home to a geological trail, a walking path showcasing the region’s unique geological features, as well as the history and culture of the village.
A number of caves are located nearby, including Yongcheon Cave, Dangcheomul Cave, and Manjanggul Lava Tube, serving as cool retreats for visitors in summer.
