The first written record of Jeju's haenyeo diving women goes back to 1629 and is stated as a "潛女(Jamnyeo)" in the 『Description of Jeju’s Natural Features』 and 『Collected Works of Guchang』, by Lee Geon. Jeju Island's haenyeo diving women were the main breadwinners in the local economy through diving and farming. In doing so they contributed greatly to the development of Jeju Island. They are a symbol of industry and toughness, but it is also true that they have generally been undervalued in society. The Jeju Haenyeo Museum was built to help re-evaluate haenyeo culture in Jeju and record, preserve and provide education about their significant contributions, socially, economically and historically. On display are informative exhibits with information regarding the local environment, fishing villages, folk culture, and fisheries industry, with the unique haenyeo culture at the center of it all.

동부구민체육센터에서 수영을 하고 나온 후, 바로 옆에 위치한 해녀박물관에 방문했습니다. 과거 해녀분들의 삶을 비롯해서 해녀 문화와 기술 등 제주 해녀분들에 대해 자세히 알아갈 수 있는 여러 전시품들과 설명이 인상깊었습니다. 특히 어린나이부터 물질을 시작해서 자신의 삶을 평생 바치신 해녀분들의 대단함이 느껴져서 감동이 몰려왔고, 혼자 방문한 해녀박물관에서 눈물을 한바가지 흘리고 왔습니다.. 점차 사라져가는 해녀라는 직업이 꼭 앞으로도 유지되었으면 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 이를 위해선 많은 사람들의 관심과 도움이 필요할 것이므로, 주변 사람들이 해녀분들에 대해 호기심과 관심을 가질 수 있도록 노력해야겠다고 다짐했습니다.
아이들을 위한 체험거리도 많고 어른들을 위한 아름다운 바다 풍경까지 누릴 수 있는 참 좋은 곳입니다.^^ 더불어 제주 해녀들의 고단한 삶까지 헤아려볼 수 있는 소중한 계기를 마련해주는 의미있는 장소였습니다. 강추합니다!!!
추천을 받고 찾아간 곳이었는데 기대 이상으로 좋았어요. 입장료도 부담없이 저렴하고, 박물관의 구성도 흥미롭고 교육적이었어요. 시청각실에서 비디오를 볼땐 해녀의 이어도사나 노랫소리에 눈물이 살짝 날 뻔 했어요. 전망대에서 보는 세화 바다도 너무 아름다웠답니다.
