Why do people seek out local markets when they find themselves in unfamiliar destinations? It’s because these places allow us to catch an up-close glimpse of how the locals live. There’s a special charm in browsing through the quaint stalls and settling down to get a taste of some local specialties. Near Moseulpo Port on the southern tip of Jeju Island are two traditional markets: Daejeong 5-day Market, which opens only on set days, and Moseulpo Jungang Market, which operates daily. Recently featured on the KBS2 variety show Boss in the Mirror, these markets let visitors get a feel for the distinct character of Jeju Island as they bask in the lively calls of the vendors, the rich aromas of delicious food, and the warm hospitality of Jeju locals.
