To preserve the value of Sanbangsan Mountain as a cultural heritage site and protect the natural monument, “Sanbangsan Cliff Plant Zone,” at the summit, entry is prohibited outside designated areas from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2031. Only the walking trail running from Sanbangsan Ticket Office to Sanbanggulsa Temple will remain accessible. Please be aware that pets are prohibited from entering.
Traveling through the southwestern region of Jeju, the eye is naturally drawn to Sanbangsan Mountain, standing proudly as an iconic landmark of Sagye-ri in Andeok-myeon with all the majesty and grandeur of a massive sculpture. Large enough to be visible from most of the southwestern portion of Jeju, it appears even more imposing due to the otherwise flat nature of the surrounding terrain. The name “Sanbang” means “a mountain with a cave,” referring to the small grotto located at the foot of the mountain, home to Sanbanggulsa Temple. Water drips unceasingly from the ceiling of the cave no matter how dry the weather, said to be the tears of the goddess “Sanbangdeok.” Set amidst the lush nature surrounding Sanbangsan and with the blue sea as a backdrop, the temple offers visitors a sense of peace and serenity.

As Yongmeori Coast lies directly in front of Sanbangsan, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the coastline from the telescopes found in the observatory at the top of the mountain. On clear days, we recommend taking a trip on a sightseeing boat for a closer, more vivid look at Yongmeori Rock and the Hyeongje Islets. The summit of Sanbangsan will occasionally be encircled by clouds, creating a captivating scene reminiscent of a painting.

In spring, a vibrant sea of yellow rapeseed flowers washes over Sanbangsan, drawing crowds eager to admire the view. In addition to taking in the scenery, nearby Hamel Museum is always worth a visit. The museum is dedicated to Hendrick Hamel, a Dutch East India Company sailor who was shipwrecked on Jeju and lived in Joseon from 1652 to 1666.
