The so-called “Golden Week” of 2017 has finally arrived. If you are planning a trip to Jeju during this time, you can enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. Many shops and restaurants will be closed as Jeju Islanders take time to visit their families during this celebration, but that doesn’t mean everything stops!

The so-called “Golden Week” of 2017 has finally arrived. If you are planning a trip to Jeju during this time, you can enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. Many shops and restaurants will be closed as Jeju Islanders take time to visit their families during this celebration, but that doesn’t mean everything stops! Various culture and folklore experience events and festivals will be held in such places as Jeju National Museum, the Jeju Folk Village, Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum, etc. This is a perfect time to get away from your busy life, take a deep, refreshing breath, and make some fun memories this holiday season.

The whole family together, celebrating the harvest festival Jeju National Museum


Jeju National Museum will hold a 'Hangawi Hanmadang' event from Saturday Sept. 30 to Friday Oct. 6 which visitors and Jeju citizens can enjoy together with their families. The traditional Korean harvest festival is being celebrated with folk plays, games, national flag making, soap carving and much more. On Oct. 5 and 6, children are invited to experience folk painting, stenciling, coaster making and more. Best of all, it’s a fun and free event for all!

Traditional folk fun in Jeju downtownJejumok Gwana


The old government office of Jejumok Gwana, which is located in downtown Jeju, is holding a variety of cultural events on its grounds during the Chuseok holiday Oct. 4 and 5. Kite flying, arrow throwing, and yutnori (a traditional board game using four wooden sticks), among other fun activities, will be on tap for the whole family to enjoy. You can also dress up in traditional Korean clothing and take photos of yourselves. This event is free to all and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on those two days.

If you wear hanbok, admission is 50% offJeju Folk Village


Jeju Folk Village, located near Pyoseon Beach, will hold various holiday programs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 9. Over the course of 10 days, you can visit their 'traditional food experience zone' which is made up of programs to make rice cake and buckwheat crepes (bingddeok), among other things. Their ‘traditional games experience zone’, meanwhile, will have hoop rolling, arrow throwing, tightrope walking, yutnori games and more. If you own or can borrow some hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) to wear when you come to Jeju Folk Village during Chuseok, you’ll be entitled to 50 percent off the admission fee.

Families coming together to experience traditionJeju Folklore and Natural History Museum


The Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum is a place where you can learn all about the folk culture of Jeju, with a particular focus on the unique natural environment of the island. It is holding a variety of cultural events on its grounds during the Chuseok holiday Oct. 4 and 5, which among the other fun activities listed above, include making bread, arm wrestling, and a treasure hunt. Please note that during the event, the history museum will be closed.

Celebrating the lives of the island’s women diversJeju Haenyeo Festival


The Jeju Haenyeo Festival is a two-day event from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 held in the area around the Jeju Haenyeo Museum and Sehwa Port. This is the 10th year of this annual event, and in addition, it is the first anniversary of the Jeju women divers being recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The festival begins with a street parade which is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 departing from the Gujwa-eup Office. Visitors to the festival will be able to see haenyeo performing their traditional working songs and telling their stories. Experience programs include bare-handed halibut fishing and other practical demonstrations of the techniques of the haenyeo divers.

‘Glad to be together!’Seogwipo Chilsimni Festival


The annual Seogwipo Chilsimni Festival will be held at Jaguri Park from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. This year is the festival’s 23rd anniversary and is themed “Glad to be together”). A parade, plays, performances, a Jeju traditional wedding ceremony, a speech and Jeju language contest and a singing competition are in store. It’s a very popular event on Jeju Island celebrating Seogwipo, one you won’t want to miss!
