As oreum are located in mountainous areas, many of them may not appear accurately on GPS navigation systems, and a large number lack parking facilities. In addition, some oreum are located on private land, with access restricted or prohibited entirely. Please check the latest information with the Jeju Tourism Information Center (064-740-6000) before attempting to visit an oreum.
Geum Oreum rises up gracefully from its relatively flat surroundings in Geumak Village, Geumak-ri, Hallim-eup. It features two peaks to the north and south of a volcanic crater, and is one of the few oreum’s whose crater forms a lake at the summit. The lake, called Wangmae, was once full of water, but it now dries up quickly after rainfall, exposing the lakebed.

The word “Geum” (or its variations “Geom, Gam, Gom”) means “godly” or “divine,” indicating that this oreum has long been regarded as sacred. A number of plant species grow here, such as black pine, cedar, wild rose, Elaeagnus, and oriental photinia.
This crater lake, along with the scenic ridge line along the crater and the beautiful open view from the summit, make Geum Oreum one of the most popular hiking destinations in Jeju. Although it reaches a maximum elevation of 428m above sea level, its height only rises about 178m compared to the land surrounding it, making for an easy climb. The crater stretches out for about 1.2km in circumference, creating a pleasant walking path providing panoramic views of Hallasan Mountain, Biyangdo Island, and Geumak Village.
