- Traditional market with kindness and simplicity<5-day Markets - Seogwipo-si>
Seogwipo is an area packed with tourist spots and natural attractions. When you travel, you are bound to visit famous attractions, but if you want a dip into local life in Jeju, visiting a five-day market, full of Jeju culture and characteristics, would be a good option. Five-day markets are open to everyone to enjoy. It is more than just a place for shopping—it’s a place to exchange and sympathize with local merchants. The fun from negotiating prices and a little extra something that merchants add into your bag is something that you can only experience at a market like these. If you are in the Seogwipo area, we recommend you make a visit to a five-day market where you can get a taste of kindness and simplicity.

Seogwipo Hyangto 5-day Market is the representative five-day market of Seogwipo-si. Organized in 1995, the market opens on days that end with a 4 or 9. As large as it is, it has a long history.

As soon as you enter the market, spaces full of vestige of life will stretch before you. Located in the heart of a bustling downtown of Seogwipo, it has everything one can look for. And it is always crowded with visitors.

The market is divided into large sections, which make it easy to explore, and you can experience the generosity of the merchants along with the variety of goods that they have to offer. Also, the market is easily accessible as there is a bus stop nearby. There is also a city tour bus that makes a stop here, so you can visit easily without having to drive all the way.

Pyoseon 5-day Market, which opens on days that end with a 4 or 7, is a small market where you can feel the friendliness of the locals from the southern part of Jeju. Unlike other five-day markets, Pyoseon 5-day Market is divided into three buildings.

The largest building is for household goods and agricultural products, the second-largest building is for a variety of fresh seasonal seafood, and the smallest building has restaurants selling Korean sausage and rice soup and pork noodles.

Its biggest appeal is that it offers quality seafood at a reasonable price since it’s located next to the Pyoseon Port. The restaurant building is filled with restaurants that are popular among the locals. You can also peep at an amusing scene of people negotiating prices. Why don’t you make a visit to Pyoseon 5-day Market, a place full of genuine life stories of the Jeju locals?

A lot of traditional markets have closed down over the years, and Goseong 5-day Market has taken over the legacy of Seongsan 5-day Market that ended business in 2019. It is now Seongsan’s only five-day market. The patrons at the market are mostly local residents of Seongsan-eup. The atmosphere at the market is quite different from that in the downtown.

It's not a place you go to find something extraordinary, but rather, it’s a place with everything necessary for life, such as fruits and vegetables, seafood, butchers, daily necessities, clothing, and farming tools.

With popular tourist attractions nearby, you can just drop by on the way. If you wish to get a grasp of the mood and friendliness of Seongsan, we recommend you stop by Goseong 5-day Market.

First opened during the Korean War, Daejeong 5-day Market is the biggest five-day market in the western part of Jeju. At the time, there were an airfield and an army training center in Daejeong-eup. With daily necessities and other commodities going in and out of the town, the businesses grew and naturally, a marketplace was organized. It was relocated several times within Daejeong-eup until it finally settled down to where it is now, Hamo-ri.

As large as it is, it is equipped with all kinds of items on top of a variety of dining options. So how about you visit to fill your empty stomach?

Daejeong 5-day Market is held on the 1st and 6th of every month. However, in a month with 31 days, it opens on the 31st and does not open on the 1st of the following day.

It is a market organized by war refugees in the 1950s. Officially opened in 1965, the market has a long history of more than 40 years. As an old marketplace located in the heart of the Jungmun Tourist Complex, full of tourist attractions, it offers a different kind of amusement. The market mostly sells agricultural products and seafood the merchants produced or caught themselves.

The size is small compared to Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market or Jeju City Traditional 5-day Market, but it certainly has a lot to see and buy. Even when you don’t have anything to buy, looking around is just as fun. The atmosphere at the market is quite different from that in downtown, and you can feel the simplicity of the old village market and the friendliness of the old ladies. As you explore the market, you can peek into the lives of the merchants and gain lively energy from them. Make sure to check out Jungmun Traditional 5-day Market to feel the warmth yourself.
