Breathtaking ViewsA Trip Around Five of Jeju’s Most Famous Waterfalls

Jeju has many waterfalls, each with different characteristics. Cheonjiyeon Falls is a 22-meter high waterfall that crashes into an eel-filled pool. The similarly-named Cheonjeyeon Falls is a three-tier waterfall famous for the bridge that gives visitors unforgettable views of the area. Seogwipo is home to Jeongbang Falls, the only waterfall in Korea that drops directly into the ocean. Meanwhile, Eongtto Falls and Wonang Falls are both spots hidden deep in Jeju’s countryside. Here is more information about each of these magnificent sights.

Waterfall and a Relaxing WalkCheonjiyeon Falls

Cheonjiyeon Falls is a waterfall on the outskirts of Seogwipo. It is 22 meters high and 12 meters wide, and its size means it is especially impressive after heavy rain. Visitors enjoy a relaxing 1km walk up the valley, complete with a stepping stone path, before finally arriving at the waterfall. Here, a platform provides the perfect view of the imposing vegetation-covered cliff face. The pool the waterfall cascades into is home to mottled eels, a type of nocturnal fish. At night when the eels come out, the area around the waterfall is lit up, giving it a mystical atmosphere. The waterfall’s location close to Seogwipo makes it a must-visit for tourists staying in or visiting the area. There is a large car park that is suitable for tour buses making it suitable for groups. As it’s fairly close to Jeongbang Waterfall, you can easily visit both waterfalls in the same morning or afternoon.

Three Tier WaterfallCheonjeyeon Falls

Cheonjeyeon Falls is a waterfall in Jungmun known for its three tiers and unique rock formations. The first two tiers are 22 meters and 30 meters high respectively, although water only flows from the first section after it rains. The water from the second fall drops into a picturesque turquoise pool that is surrounded by dense vegetation, making the area seem hidden despite being so close to Jungmun. While the surroundings are rocky, there is a dedicated path that takes visitors between the three waterfalls, as well as past Cheonjeru Pavilion. The area is also home to Seonimgyo Bridge, a 128-meter long arch that crosses between the second and third sections of the waterfall. It is 78 meters high, meaning visitors get a unique perspective of the valley below. The bridge has a red and white design with seven figures carved into the side. These are nymphs that, according to local legend, come down from heaven and bathe in the waterfall’s pool at night. Cheonjeyeon Falls is located within Jungmun Tourist Complex, meaning it is convenient for those staying in one of the area’s hotels.

Unique in KoreaJeongbang Falls

Jeongbang Falls is famous for being the only waterfall in Korea where the water drops directly into the sea. It is 23 meters high, and the water crashes into the rocky beach; spraying you if you get close enough. The cliffs surrounding the waterfall not only create a spectacular view, but they also mean it is completely hidden from the rest of the island. From the waterfall, you get beautiful views out over the rocky beach and across the sea towards Seopseom Island. The waterfall is right on the edge of Seogwipo City, making it a super short trip if you are staying in one of the area’s hotels. Cheonjiyeon Falls is just over 2km away. Olle Trail 6, one of the coastal walking paths that surround the island, also passes by the entrance.

Hidden Cliff with a SecretEongtto Falls

Eongtto Falls is a waterfall hidden away in the Seogwipo countryside. Despite being relatively close to the southern city, it isn’t as well-known as the other waterfalls on this list, meaning it doesn’t have as many people visiting. Unfortunately, you can only see the waterfall when there has been recent rain in the mountainous areas of Jeju. But this makes it extra special if you are lucky enough to see it. From the entrance, you travel down a path on the edge of woodland that brings you to an opening. Here you can see the waterfall on a large cliff with a pool at the bottom. It’s 50 meters high, making it by far the tallest on our list. The waterfall is close to the new part of Seogwipo, which means you’re close to sites like Seogwipo World Cup Stadium and Gogeunsan Oreum. The path to the waterfall is part of Olle Trail 7-1, a walking path that takes travelers through the countryside around Seogwipo City.

Flowing Water in an Idyllic ValleyWonang Falls

Wonang Falls is a waterfall located in Donnaeko Valley, one of the few sections of stream on Jeju that has running water all year round. The rocky gorge is surrounded by evergreen plants and the idyllic waterfall comes into its own when the sunlight seeps in through the trees, reflecting off the water. While it may not be as tall as other waterfalls on this list, Wonang Fall’s location in a hidden valley ensures it is just as impressive. In summer Wonang Falls has one huge benefit over the others on this list, namely that you can swim in the pool at the bottom of it. The water coming from the slopes of Hallasan Mountain is icy cold and a refreshing break from the summer heat. The valley is located a short drive from Seogwipo City in the lower regions of Hallasan Mountain. There is a car park and even camping facilities nearby.
