The best way to explore an unusually lovely village1. Jongdal-ri

Sometimes it’s OK to lose your way for a while. At the end of a newly explored street, you may encounter a scene that is more wonderful than you could ever imagine. On the east end of Jeju Island, a road such as this leads you to Jongdal village, at the foot of Jimi-bong Volcanic Cone. There are cute little shops all around the area, including independent book sellers, handmade pottery and handicrafts shops, and of course your choice of café. If you would like to take a closer look at the hidden attractions of this village, there is the “Pongnang” tour course which is a perfect way for you to experience all the charm of this place as you stroll through it.

Leaves that shelter a painful past2. Bulkabunnang tree, Seonheul Camellia Wetland, Nakseon-dong April 3rd Incident site

Sometimes you find a painful historical site in an unexpected place. The village of Seonheul, in Jocheon-eup, was devastated by fire during the events of the Jeju April 3rd Incident. This included a hackberry tree in the local village meeting spot. However, a few years later a sprout emerged from the scarred tree. It has recovered over the decades and is now known as the Bulkabunnang tree, a name that acknowledges its painful past. Other historical sites regarding the Incident include the Seonheul Camellia Wetland, and the Nakseon-dong neighborhood of Jocheon-eup, in Jeju’s northeast. To visit these sites is to take in their contemplative beauty and the deeper meaning of peace.

A mysterious, misty valley3. Mulyeongari Oreum

If you find yourself traveling Jeju in the rain, take heart! The island’s hidden waterfalls spring to life with sudden deluges of precipitation. The roar of the torrent of water pounding the rocks below and the romantic mist rising among the the thick foliage of the evergreen forest is truly impressive. Keep an eye out for the waterfowl and other animals that thrive in the island’s thick forest. It takes about 30 minutes to climb the stairs at Mulyeongari Oreum, and a gently sloped trail down is also recommended.

Where sunlight rarely reaches the forest floor4. Cheongsu-ri ‘Gotjawal Firefly Festival’

Deep within the pristine forest of the Jeju Gotjawal, fireflies illuminate a darkened space underneath the thick canopy of old-growth trees. At the Cheongsu Gotjawal there is a unique firefly experience program which runs for 40 days starting June 1. In order to protect the local ecosystem, just 900 people a day are able to participate in the first-come, first-served tours which run every 15 minutes from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. You must make a reservation in person at the site at 2 p.m. If you get a spot on the tour, please avoid making loud noises or movements. Flash photography and catching these protected creatures is also verboten.

※ Note: The experience program’s content and times may vary. (Inquiries 064-772-1303)

Undulating waves, artists’ meditations6. Jaguri Park ‘Artists’ Walking Trail’

Many artists have been inspired by nature. The celebrated Korean artist Lee Joong-seop made his home in Seogwipo and was inspired by the deep blues of the ocean and earth tones of the rural coastline. Other themes in his work included images of Seop and Munseom Islets, and Jeju children playing in their neighborhoods. A street named after Lee is part of an “Artists’ Walking Trail” that starts at the Lee Joong-seop Art Gallery and ends a short distance from the coast at Soam Memorial Hall.

A summer sight7. Walking Jeju’s hydrangea trail

As summer approaches, you can almost hear the island’s flowers bursting on their branches. The fragrant hydrangeas, which are full of small, colorful petals, are the epitome of the season. As the summer rain commences these plants thrive, becoming even more spectacular to behold. The road at the Andeok-myeon Administrative Office is especially famous for its dense concentration hydrangeas. But there are plenty more sites to choose from in June, including festivals at Hueree Natural Park and Camellia Hill.

Gaze upon the glowing scarlet sea8. Dakmeori Coastal Road

This spot may have a special power to reinvigorate tired urbanites with its exquisite blend of ocean views and soothing sunsets. Located on Olle Walking Trail No. 18, there is a wooden staircase leading up to an observation deck. It is also a popular spot for children's ecology education programs because the people of Shinchon village keep the area so immaculate. At the end of the day, as the sun sets in the west you can simply stand on the shore of Dakmeori and bathe yourself in the warm, healthy glow of a hopeful tomorrow.

Jeju as set in earthenware9. Jeju Gueok Onggi Village

Jeju Onggi earthenware inhales and exhales. Unlike ordinary earthenware, the Jeju soil that is hardened in a 1,200-degree oven develops fine cracks that can breathe as they are not covered in lacquer. You can learn more about traditional Jeju earthenware making and firing at the Onggi Experience School in Gueok village, a local artisanal specialty for over 250 years. The cost of the two-hour program is 20,000 won per person. After the class your work will be fired, cured, and mailed to you. This is undoubtedly a special opportunity to see, smell, touch and cherish your own Jeju earthenware creation. For more information, call 064-792-1509.

10. Jeju sea urchin cuisine

Early in the summer season, enjoy the full freshness of Jeju’s seafood. Take, for example, the sea urchin. From early June to July, this delicacy is collected by the Jeju diving women, or haenyeo, and others who explore the shallow waters of the coast. This nutritious marine product is added to mixed rice, included in a variety of soups, and at the “Seogwang Chunhee” restaurant is even used as an ingredient in a fusion ramen noodle dish! At “Road 129” in Aewol-eup, Jeju City, one intrepid chef has added urchin to its rich, cream pasta. Though not to everyone’s liking (but then again, what is?) Jeju’s fresh sea urchin cuisine is a quintessential ingredient in local gourmet travel.
