While you travel, it’s always a treat to try the local specialties. Everything is so new, and so unusual, that you can learn a great deal in a short space of time. Jeju, for example, is Korea’s largest island, a volcanic one with a select number of crops that grow well in the porous soil. Typically you’ll find citrus, carrots, green tea, apple mango, and peanuts. Why not visit some of the island’s specialty cafes during your trip?     The main citrus producing region of Korea is Jeju Island. Its climate is warm and humidity moderate, and so it has a long history of growing oranges and other fruit. It’s easy to find orchards all over the island, particularly in the south. But now, it’s also common to find citrus industry infrastructure, like warehouses, that have been converted into cafes.

    One such example is the Analog Citrus Field, a cafe with motifs like being “slow,” “antique,” and “natural.” The interior and exterior of this establishment is very pretty and there are many opportunities to take great photos. They serve tangerine and Hallabong juice, and a green tangerine aide, among other menu items. There’s also a tangerine picking experience program for 7,000 won per person. You can take home up to 1 kilogram of your picked tangerines.

    Taste handmade jellied Hallabong citrusCafe And (cafe 앤드)

    Hallabong is a winter fruit that is representative of Jeju Island citrus. It is similar in size and shape to tangerine oranges, but has a rougher surface, a higher sugar content, and a smooth, juicy appearance. One place on the island to try the Hallabong fruit as used in jellied desserts (known as Yokan in Japanese cuisine) is near Sanbansan Mountain in Seogwipo. The chef/owner of Cafe And has developed a special recipe that is fresh, not too sweet, and a very faithful representation of the natural goodness of the Hallabong fruit. You can also try their Hallabong smoothies or lattes.

    Located in the middle of a Hado village carrot fieldCafe Be Around

    With the volcanic Jeju soil being high in organic content and good drainage, this is the perfect place to grow beautifully round, smooth, crispy and tasty carrots. In fact Jeju is famous in Korea for its carrots, which have a rich, deep fragrance and high sugar content, and thus supplies the lion’s share of the nation’s carrot crop. 

    Cafe Be Around is located in the eastern part of Jeju where most of the island’s carrots are grown. They use these organic carrots in their dishes. Visitors can also sit outside in the sunshine and relax with a freshly made glass of healthy carrot juice or another similarly delicious beverage.

    A famous spot for carrot cakeGujwa Sanghoe

    Chances are you’ve heard of this particular cafe via TV or on social media. Its reputation for fantastic carrot cake, using local ingredients, precedes it. The natural sweetness of the carrots, soft cream cheese, and a touch of cinnamon combine perfectly. The cafe itself is a renovated old stone house and there’s plenty of repurposed wood and natural ambiance to go around. The only drawback is it’s located in a small rural alley and there is little to no parking available nearby.

    Korea's representative green tea brandO’sulloc Tea Museum

    You might associate green tea items and culture with Japan, but rest assured, Jeju has a long history of cultivating the tea plant and preparing the beverage as well. With the mountain and sea in close proximity, the island’s climate is very suitable to growing high quality green tea. There is plenty of sunshine, wind, and precipitation. 

    The largest green tea plantation in Korea is located in the southwest of the island. The O’sulloc Tea Museum is built there and attracts a huge number of visitors annually. The museum hosts classes by tea masters and serves up all sorts of green tea beverages and desserts. There’s even green tea ice cream! You can walk through the tea fields there and purify your body and mind.

    Seongeup Green Tea Cafe “Today”

    The Seongeup Green Tea Village, located in the Folk Village at Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo, is perhaps less famous that O’sulloc and its Tea Museum. But it, too, has tea fields in a beautiful location with uplifting scenery, Hallasan Mountain, and nearby oreum (volcanic cones) to admire. The cafe Today (“O/neul/eun”) is operated by the Folk Village and offers a variety of delicious beverages and desserts using green tea, like their shakes, iced green tea, and green tea lattes. There’s a must-use photo zone on the cafe’s terrace.

    Seongsan Ilchulbong seen at a glanceCafe Haetteul

    In keeping with its Korean name, they say if you consume cactus extract it will cure 100 diseases and you’ll be able to live to be 100 years old. Jeju’s mineral rich soil means the cactus plant is also rich in calcium, iron and dietary fiber. Cafe Haetteul serves a cool cactus aide and fresh cactus bread which is both delicious and nutritious. Best of all, you can enjoy it with an amazing view of the beloved UNESCO World Natural Heritage site of Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), which dominates the scenery of the northeast of the island.

    If you visit Jeju in summer, then the fruit to try is the island’s apple mango. It boasts a higher sugar content than the regular mango, and is a seasonal favorite for its low acidity and soft texture. The dessert cafe Meokkuseulnang makes the most of this fruit in its yogurt parfait, apple mango juice, toast and ice cream, among other items. You can’t go wrong, regardless of what you order here.

    No need to travel all the way to Udo Island for peanut ice creamIce Cream Institute (Olle Market Branch)

    Peanut varieties are generally similar in shape and flavor. However, the peanuts grown on Udo Island are special in that they are smaller and have a very delicate flavor. Thus, travellers to Udo have made a point of trying the very famous and delicious Udo peanut ice cream. There’s even a peanut-flavored fermented rice wine, makgeolli!
