Exciting flavors, scentsEateries around Pyeongdae Village

Jeju Island is divided into the two main regions of Jeju City and Seogwipo City — north and south, respectively. But it also has a number of smaller administrative units, right down to the village level. And then there’s the different geography, myths, culture and cuisine. Of these, every village has its own merits and interesting characteristics to discover. In one coastal village called Pyeongdae, it’s possible to feel completely at home, even though it’s an unfamiliar place. Here you can enjoy a delicious beverage and a magnificent sea view from a roof terrace. Why not give it a try?

Get close to the blue sea and autumn skyJibungwi Jejubada

Sometimes when your mind is running a thousand miles an hour, you just need to take a breathe and immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings. On Jeju, the benefit of having a ubiquitous and ever present view of soothing ocean waves is something everyone should take advantage of. If you are planning a trip to Jeju, Pyeongdae village’s Jubungwi Jejubada restaurant has a veranda on its roof where you can enjoy simple food and a glass of cool beer. The ground floor is separated from the rooftop, and although it is not spacious, it has an attractive charm that embraces blue sea and attractive autumn sky.

Not only can you appreciate the sea from the rooftop, but also the colorful stone walls of local homes and the surrounding fields. The scenery of Jeju Island, you’ll find, is entrancing. This particular establishment will take your telephone number when you order, so you can go upstairs while you wait for your food. You’ll get a text when it’s ready. If you like spicy dishes (or prefer a mild meal), you can ask for modifications when you place your order.

Hawaiian-style shrimp dishesShrimp Box

This place is, in a word, colorful. A Hawaiian-themed restaurant, it is full of palm trees, surfing posters, aloha signs. You feel like you’re right there in Hawaii! Shrimp Box started out as a food truck but its outstanding quality spread by word of mouth until they just had to set up shop (without wheels!) to accommodate the demand. In this unusual atmosphere you’ll be treated to spicy shrimp and hot white rice boxed together in a delicious combo that is based on their food truck take-out menu.

The plump, seasoned shrimp in a one-of-a-kind meal is something you can enjoy from their rooftop veranda under a two-person parasol. There are two items to chose from on the menu: original shrimp and spicy shrimp, and both are good with a Hawaiian beer. And since it’s close to the ocean, if you want to enjoy your meal on the go at the beach you can do that, too!

Rock octopus with mixed rice and a viewBengdi

In the Jeju language, Bengdi means a “flat and wide field”. This restaurant of the same name is located in just such an environment, with a smooth incline from the southwest down to the northeast coast. Its specialty is rock octopus, and this makes sense given its proximity to the ocean. The mixed rice rock octopus dish is seasoned and served in a large bowl. It’s so visually striking that you’ll find plenty of photos uploaded to social media by happy customers.

Note that there’s also a black pork stir fry option in addition to the octopus, so if you go as a couple or in a larger group, it’s possible to order both and try them in a delicious combination. Bengi is open until 9 p.m. which is a good thing because it has become so popular that you might just have to wait in line, or better, put your name on the waiting list and take a pleasant seaside stroll to build an appetite!

Enjoy the blue sea while reclining on a red beanbagCafe Mani

Even if it’s just for a cup of tea, more and more people are carefully taking into account the location and theme of the Jeju cafe they patronize. And there’s plenty of choice in terms of a cafe’s concept and backstory to be had! For one, the conical shape of this volcanic island means that more often than not you will have a view of the ocean from wherever you are. Cafe Mani has taken advantage of this fact by setting up a pleasant outdoor terrace, complete with comfortable red beanbags on which customers can recline while they enjoy a coffee, tea or other beverage.

The cafe itself is a remodeled Jeju stone house and its wooden interior gives off a warm feeling. The sound of the waves in front of you will soothe your urban stresses and there are plenty of things to admire about the outdoor location, including its ocean view, the black Jeju stone walls, verdant fields and more. So sit back, relax, and take in a truly Jeju experience. And don’t forget to record it with a photo or video and share it with your friends!

An Italian restaurant with Jeju sensibilitiesSaturday Island

Woljeong Beach and Sehwa village are simple, small, and spectacular. It’s quiet and charming. If you are looking for a place to eat, and perhaps have a hankering for something Italian, then Saturday Island is a good choice for a date or a pleasant meal with friends.

The signature dishes on the menu include Sicilian pasta with grilled shrimp and abalone risotto with cream sauce. Delicious! You can enjoy the freshness of the ingredients which hail from the nearby Jeju sea. Saturday Island’s interior decor you’ll notice is one of a remodeled small Jeju warehouse, and so there is a truly vintage feel to the place. All in all, you’ll find you’ve made all sorts of new, fond memories here along the Woljeong / Sehwa coast.
