'Faster, cheaper, more convenient'The all new Jeju public transportation system

There’s some great news for visitors to Jeju. The island’s public transportation system has been totally reorganized and in operation from August 26, 2017! The fact is, over the past five years or so, the number of tourists visiting Jeju has increased dramatically, and the island’s population has also grown. In order to alleviate any inconveniences related to traffic congestion and public transportation, the province has now implemented a revised plan for its public transport system. Let's take a closer look at how Jeju's public transit system has been improved in terms of more bus routes, express buses, an easier to follow bus numbering system, even free Wi-Fi. All this is going to make travelling around Jeju all that much quicker and convenient. Let’s take a ride!

"Which bus are you looking for?"

Easy to distinguish at a glanceNew numbering system and color scheme

Jeju’s bus system is divided into city and intercity buses. Intercity express buses are numbered in the 100s, city buses for Jeju and Seogwipo have the numbers 200, 300, 500, village buses are numbered 400, 600, 700, and finally, buses in the outlying areas that take visitors to key sightseeing spots and volcanic cones (810, 820).

These bus routes all combine to provide comprehensive coverage of the island. With regard to the new color scheme, express buses are red, main route intercity and city buses are blue, branch buses are green, and the buses covering sightseeing areas are yellow. These easy to remember colors mean you can keep track of your route as you transfer from one bus to another.

Solving problems with bus stops, traffic, paymentsExpress bus system in operation

The new express buses are certainly going to be a hit with users.

They link up Jeju International Airport with key stops around the island, making good time and adding an extra level of convenience and piece of mind for travelers. It’s estimated that with the express buses in operation, you’ll be able to travel to pretty much any part of the island by bus within an hour. The base rate for these red buses is 2,000 won. Depending on your destination, the maximum fee will be 3,000 won(*). If you don’t already have one, it’s advisable to pick up a rechargeable transportation card at a convenience store at the airport or around the island… this will make your payment transactions all that much smoother.

Note: You’ll need a transportation card if you want to transfer from bus to bus.
(*) Fee was reduced from an initial maximum of 4,000 won.

"Unbelieveable! Bus travel that is this convenient?"

Ride the bus all day and all over JejuTourist area circulation routes

It’s generally been the case that traveling by bus to Jeju’s interior, for example to hike a particular volcanic cone, was very complicated or perhaps impossible. Bus routes and some sightseeing areas did not overlap as well as they should. So a lot of thought was put into the new tourist bus circulation bus routes at Daecheon-dong (Gujwa-eup to the east) and Donggwang-ri (Andeok-myeon to the west). The Eastern District Tourist Area Circulation Bus departs from Daecheon-dong and past the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center, Bijarim Forest and and Yongnuni Oreum. The Western District Tourist Area Circulation Bus covers Shinhwa World, the Jeju Aerospace Museum, Jeju O’sulloc Tea Museum, Jeoji Oreum and other spots in the southwest. These yellow buses operate at 30-minute intervals from 8:30 a.m. to a final departure at 5:30 p.m. The fare is 1,200 won per trip (no transfers). This new system is sure to help visitors discover the hidden treasures of Jeju Island!

This means that you’ll not just be waiting for a bus but rather, waiting in comfort! More than 200 stops will have electronic, real-time bus information systems (BIT) in place, so you can accurately monitor when your bus will arrive.

Keeping informed and in touchFree Wi-Fi service

Not only will your trip be more comfortable, but you’ll be better informed than ever before! Free Wi-Fi at stops and in the buses will mean you can keep up on the latest weather, news, and keep in touch with friends and family. Upload your latest fantastic photos and videos of Jeju Island to them on social media. And don’t forget to download and use the Jeju bus information app on your smartphone during your journey on Jeju Island.

"How much is the bus fare?"

Unified fees, longer allowable times for valid transfersIf it’s one way without a transfer, it’s just 1,200 won

As you may have gathered, the new Jeju bus system means traveling on the island is now faster, more convenient, and cheaper! All the buses within the city are 1,200 won, regardless of your destination. Allowable transfer times (up to 2 transfers per trip) have also been extended from 30 to 40 minutes, to reduce any headaches getting from one bus to another. (Make sure to press your transportation card to the payment point when you depart the bus if you want to transfer to another bus!)  Just another great improvement to Jeju’s public transportation system. We hope it will serve you well.
