In a time of rapid innovation, especially with online trends and the ubiquity of social media, Jeju Island is also being swept up in the spirit of change, and its beloved cafes are no exception. In addition to enjoying coffee and drinks in a pleasant atmosphere, there are ever more cafes that are just plain fun to visit for young people and coffee enthusiasts alike. And of course when you’re traveling or on vacation and have time to slow down a bit and literally “smell the coffee”, there’s no better opportunity to experience Jeju life in a comfortable, thoughtful and enjoyable way. For one, many of Jeju’s cafes are located in beautiful locales along the coast and in the forest. The scenery is just breathtaking, and deserving of a slow, measured appreciation. So with this in mind, let’s explore some of the trendiest and unique cafes that Jeju has to offer at the moment.
From the outside, this bright red cafe along the north coast of the island is hard to miss. The owner has filled it with a decade’s worth of Coca-Cola related memorabilia collected from here and overseas. And it shows: it’s a marvel that intrigues visitors and locals alike. The menu includes coffee drinks with a cola theme and many cola items and souvenirs that are available for purchase. Just a stone’s throw from the cafe is Gwideok and Yeongdeung Halmang Sinhwa Park. This is a very pleasant place for a walk and of course, a Coke or a coffee.
As night falls in Aewol-eup not far from the 1132 Road, there’s a place when the volume on the music rises. The LP cafe Matilda opens at 7 p.m. and the tunes resonate through space housed in exposed concrete. There are thousands of LPs and some classic analog equipment on which to play them. Requests are accepted. As you admire the tranquil night scenery of the ocean, enjoy a drink and a song. Coffee, beer and liquor are all served.
Since 1990 and through 28 seasons, the Simpsons has been on our TV screens. This popular cartoon is satirical and often edgy, airing on FOX. Recently the members of this extremely popular family have arrived on Jeju Island at a cafe with an ocean view and many images of the characters’ yellow skin, unique hairstyles, and large cartoonish eyes. Located just 10 minutes by car from Jeju International Airport, if you’re a Simpsons fan this is a great place to visit on your first or last day on the island. Cafe Do Doo serves a variety of desserts and drinks and also has Simpsons merchandise like slippers, aprons, bags and more. In the photo zone, you can dress up in Marge Simpson’s hair or Homer’s face and take lots of funny selfies. So in addition to the good memories, you can celebrate this extremely famous and popular TV family right here on an island far, far away from Springfield USA.
