    If your initial impression of Jeju is that there’s only the occasional small neighborhood bakery, the good news is that a lot has changed in recent years. Nowadays top-notch Jeju bakeries are attracting customers simply by word of mouth. The baking selections and styles are unique from establishment to establishment, turning out bread and pastry to rival those in other countries. Here are eight places to get you started.

    Take a bite of this chocolate croissant!

    Bonjour Madame



    Bonjour Madam has a blue-painted exterior, giving it an exotic feel. It is a place where you can enjoy authentic French bread. Chocolate croissants adorned with chocolate stripes are a popular menu item. In addition, you can try a variety of extraordinary — some might say exotic — offerings like a custard-filled cannelé, campagne bread, or a butter pretzel. Domestic organic wheat flour, fresh cream and butter are used to make it healthy. Bonjour Madame is closed Mondays.

    House Recipe



    This famous establishment has been offering just a single menu item for over a decade. Its success comes down to the hearty Jeju carrot. At first taste, it may seem a little odd to some because the texture and flavor differ from carrot cake sold in more mainstream bakeries and cafes. However, this delicious carrot cake is sure to please. Note that House Recipe is small, so due to its popularity, purchases are limited to 1 per customer.

    Ma Marron



    This place has a relaxed atmosphere much like you’d find at a friend's house. Its main branch is in Seogwipo, and a second opened in Aewol. Ma Marron is popular with women because of its pretty pretty desserts, comfortable setting, and reasonable prices. Note that if you come later in the day, then your choice of baking items will be limited… they sell out quite early. Be sure to take a stroll around the cafe as well, as there are some pleasant artworks and statues about.

    Four fantastic flavors of Choux pastry

    Buono Rimini



    Located along the beautiful seaside of Hamdeok Beach, this dessert cafe is famous for its four flavors of Choux pastry — Hallabong citrus, Jeju green tea, rose pedals and Belgian chocolate. The mastermind behind these creations is Chef Jung Eui Hyuk. He is the first person in Asia to take second place in the group category of the Italian Confectionary Exhibition SIGEP. Also on offer are a variety of croissants and sandwiches.

    Geo foods modeled on Jeju geology: mugwort bread & Udo peanut tart

    Café Coji



    Café Koji, located near Seongsan Ilchulbong, is famous for selling geofood baking items that reflect Jeju's geological characteristics. The bread is delicious and word of mouth has brought thousands of happy customers through its doors. If you try the mugmort bread, it is served with fresh citrus jam and fresh cream. Tarts with Udo peanuts offer the richness and flavor of this local island produce. People also rave about the cheesy muffins and their rich creamy taste.

    Barley and mugwort bread that is so popular that it's standing room only

    Deok Indang



    With stores in Jocheon-eup and Jeju City, Deok Indang specializes in traditional Jeju barley bread and red bean barley bread. The prices, too, resemble something akin to what you might find in the old days. They charge between 600 and 800 won per bun, so many people buy them by the box. It’s not uncommon to find that they are completely sold out for the day.

    How do they do that? Transforming bread into watermelon

    Nemorang



    This trendy bakery has gotten a lot of attention online due to its unique watermelon bread. Using natural green and black pigments to mimic the color of the watermelon, the loaf is delicately constructed to resemble a genuine slice of watermelon including the green and white rind and red ripe fruit in the center. It’s so good that jam isn’t really needed. Nemorang also has a variety of items like its Halahala bread, chocolate bread, and double cheese bread. In tandem with the bread are various paper toys featuring the Avengers, K-Pop stars, and more.

    What has 8 legs and is made out of cake? A popular octopus/cheese creation

    Found in various places such as the Seogwipo Olle Market, Udo Island and Sanbangsan Mountain, octopus bread is a street snack that is representative of Jeju Island. The dried octopus and mozzarella cheese flavors combine in a chewy texture that is addictive and delicious.
