Word of mouth — or more accurately these days, SNS — is a major source of customers for Jeju cafes. Vadada, which is located in Jungmun, Seogwipo, has an expansive view of the ocean and an especially large grassy area that’s popular with customers. It’s been described as having a kind of “foreign resort” feel, especially with the large chairs arranged on the outdoor lawn area. Music, too, greatly influences the atmosphere of the place, and at dusk, it’s positively overflowing with energy and mood.

What better use of a retired orange farm warehouse than converting it into a village cafe! Its high ceilings make it cool and comfortable in summer as well as giving people a feeling of openness. The menu, too, makes remarkable use of citrus in its drink and dessert ideas. In addition to the usual selection of teas are mandarin orange and hallabong citrus teas, and an orange caramel cake and orange-infused pancake option. In particular, the mandarin crunch and cappuccino is a great combo. Homemade dried citrus fruit, citrus cookies, and citrus fruit roll-ups are also on offer.

Among the liters of coffee flowing at cafes along the Lee Joong-seop cultural street in central Seogwipo is a famous spot with especially delicious java. The owner/barista gave the shop his name. It’s a small space, but the large variety of coffee selections — based on acidity, bitterness, strength, etc. — more than makes up for it. If you’d rather something else on the menu, then there are melon smoothies, for example. The ice cream and shaved ice desserts are also very popular.

Located in the western area of Jeju Island at Hallim, this cafe was established in an old starch factory that had been shuttered for 20 years. Apparently it took some three months to remove all the starch dust and in the meantime the owner had tables made out of the trees which grew at the abandoned structure. The factory’s old iron doors and other abandoned equipment were left to give the place its special atmosphere, along with the addition of volcanic rocks for the flooring. You can call Anthracite a cafe with a vintage sensibility, charming interior, and an artistic feel.

Run by Kim Young-han, author of the book “I Drink Jeju Monsooned Coffee Every Morning”, Sea&Blue is special in that it grows its own coffee at a nearby arboretum. Unlike other coffee producers who wash their beans to eliminate impurities, Kim prefers to Monsoon his coffee beans, meaning they are aged and exposed to moisture while laying on a warehouse floor. The flavor of this establishment’s coffee, in addition to the great view of the ocean and Hyeopjaeseom Islets, gives the entire experience a relaxed, comfortable feel.
