Jungmun Saekdal Beach is 560-meter long and 50-meter wide beach located in the Jungmun Tourist Complex in Saekdal-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju, known for its uniquely textured “Jinmosal” sands in hues of black, white, red, and gray, and for its crescent-shaped shoreline. The colorful sands appear particularly striking alongside the signature black volcanic rocks of Jeju Island.
This exotic, palm tree-filled beach lies between the Jungmun Tourist Complex, Cheonjiyeon Falls, and Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff, attracting more than one million people visit annually to have fun in the water and enjoy some marine sports. It was originally called “Jinmosal,” meaning “long sand beach.” The sand appears to change color throughout the day, depending on how the sunlight hits it.
The waves here are larger and more frequent than at other beaches on the island, making it a popular spot for surfers; Korea’s largest international surfing competition is even held here annually between June and July. It was also selected as the cleanest out of 44 beaches nationwide in a survey by the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement in 1999. Near the steps leading to Cheonjiyeon Falls stands a statue of a haenyeo (female diver), offering a glimpse into the unique haenyeo culture of Jeju Island.
On the right side of the beach lies a 15-meter natural sea cave, surrounded by cliffs like a folding screen. At low tide, the water follows unique patterns of movement that are quite enjoyable to watch as it flows toward the east. Caution is advised when visiting with children, as the current is relatively strong; however, these same currents make the beach an excellent spot for windsurfing enthusiasts.
