The volcanic cone is often visited due to its trail, which lets tourists or citizens enjoy the sunrise early in the morning. This trail extends from Samyang Ilju Road to Samyang Thermal Power Station, and is suitable for going on brisk walks while enjoying the fresh air.

The origin of the name Wondangbong Volcanic Cone comes from the fact that Wondang Shrine, the shrine of the Yuan, was located on the halfway point of the volcanic cone during the time of the Yuan Dynasty. It is also called Mang Oreum Volcanic Cone because it was where Wondang Beacon Fire Station was installed during the Joseon Dynasty, Samyangbong because it is located in Samyang-dong, and Wondangchilbong (Samcheopchilbong) because of the 7 (Chil) peaks on the 3 (Sam) ridges.
