We recommend Bijarim Forest as the perfect place to stroll slowly along and immerse yourself in the magic of the forest. This thousand-year-old forest is home to naturally-growing 500- to 800-year-old Torreya trees, a rare find globally. A variety of these trees may be found in the forest, from trees struck by lightning to massive ancient monoliths illustrating the passage of long centuries. In addition to Torreyas, the forest is filled with a number of other species such as maples and red machilus, creating a pleasant aroma that wafts out from the entrance of the forest. A walk along the refreshing forest trail here, breathing in the phytocide-filled air, will have you praising the wonders of forest bathing.

The trails through Bijarim Forest are divided into Route A and Route B. Both routes are a pleasant walk, but Course B includes a somewhat rough stone path; thus, Route A is recommended for expectant mothers and parents with young children. The two routes separate at a four-way intersection within the forest, and Course A stretches 2.2 km, taking approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour to walk. Most of the trail is a flat path covered with volcanic scoria, making it suitable for strollers. Both Route A and Route B lead to the ancient Torreya known as the “Tree of One Thousand Years,” as well as the dense woods of intertwined trees located deeper within the forest.

Bijarim Forest is also home to a number of rare orchids and plants such as the Samurai Orchid, Bulbophyllum drymoglossum, and East Asian thrixspermum. If you are curious about the stories and legends surrounding the forest, consider joining a guided exploration program to learn about the different plants growing in Bijarim and the hidden tales of the forest. Since the program schedule is flexible, we recommended confirming times by phone before visiting.
