Biyangdo Island is located off the west coast of Jeju in Hallim-eup, visible from nearby Hyeopjae Beach. Please note that this is a separate island from the Biyangdo located off the coast of Udo Island. The youngest of Jeju’s volcanic islands, Biyangdo is only 0.5km² in area, small enough to be fully explored within two to three hours. Ferries to the island depart about 4 times a day from Hallim Port, and the ride takes roughly 15 minutes. Since the schedule may change depending on the weather, we recommend checking departure times in advance by phone before visiting.

The coastal road on the island passes by several unique rock formations, with the two most popular being Elephant Rock and Aegieobeundol, a rock shaped like a woman carrying a baby on her back. Another highlight is “Pillangmot,” a rare coastal salt marsh formed through varying salinity levels as seawater flows in and out.

Due to its small size, Biyangdo is a popular trekking destination featuring two main routes: the Biyang Oreum Trail, which starts at the port and circles around Biyangbong Peak, and the Biyangdo Circuit Trail, which circles the entire island. The Biyang Oreum Trail alternates between flat stretches of path and wooden stairs, with a white lighthouse lying in wait at the top; we highly recommended climbing up to enjoy the stunning view looking down over the island. The Circuit Trail is slightly longer at about 1.3km, and showcases the island’s beautiful basalt rock formations and coastline. We recommend obtaining a geological exploration map of Biyangdo to learn about its key attractions before beginning your journey.

Biyangdo is also home to several popular photo spots, including a stone wall decorated with colorful conch shells, with the sea glimmering in the background through the gaps between rocks. A bamboo forest tunnel has also formed naturally over time along the path up to Biyangbong Peak, providing an ideal setting for gorgeous photos standing at the center with the ocean in the background.

Biyangdo is also the subject of a local legend.

According to legend, Biyangdo was an oreum (volcanic cone) that flew over from China during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). It’s sudden arrival off the coast of Hyeopjae-ri caused a mass of sand to surge up from the seabed and cover the shoreline, burying a nearby village. It is said that human bones, pottery, and the soft soil from the fields may still be found to this day by digging beneath the sand. The legend also tells that Biyangdo actually lost its way mid-flight and had to execute an abrupt turn before stopping at its current position, resulting in the island’s current shape.
