Located in Gwakji-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju, Gwakji Gwamul Beach is one of the nicer beaches on the island, composed of a 350-meter-long and 70-meter-wide stretch of white sand with an average water depth of 1.5 meters. It lies about 10 kilometers from downtown Jeju City, in between Hyeopjae Beach to the left and Iho Tewoo Beach to the right. As the beach is located on the island’s northern coast, waves are relatively small.
Cold spring water, enclosed by a stone wall, wells up from beneath the sands here at low tide, used both for bathing and as a source of drinking water. Behind the beach lies a pine forest and a Red Cross Youth Training Center, making it a popular spot for company and group outings.
The area is composed of volcanic basaltic sand, making a perfect habitat for shellfish, such as clams; indeed, shell mounds dating back to the prehistoric era have been discovered here, and shell collecting is a popular pastime alongside swimming. As the water is exceptionally clear, it’s also a great spot for jet skiing.
In addition to swimming, visitors can explore nearby Wolmyeongsa Temple or drive along the scenic coastal road connecting Handam Rest Area to Hallim Bridge, which passes by a number of unique basalt formations and striking volcanic cliffs. The beach conveniently equipped with basic facilities, and the pine forest can be used as a camping spo
