Bomok Damselfish Festival
■ Period: Between May and June every year
Falling in love with Jeju’s New Flavor, “Damselfish”
Damselfish is a fish that is inseparable from the people of Jeju. A fish as big as one’s palm, damselfish is commonly eaten as sashimi, grilled, or salted or pickled. People enjoy it so much that there is even a saying: “Eating cold damselfish sashimi soup 5 times in the summer keeps a doctor away.” It’s not certain why people call damselfish jari in Korean (jari means a place in Korean), but some say it got that name because that fish likes staying in one place.
Jeju’s damselfish has a lot of calcium and has a rich, nutty taste. It is in season during the summer, from May to August. It is eaten in various ways such as cold sashimi soup, rolls, grilled, salad, or pickled. Damselfish is commonly used to make cold sashimi soup and grilled meat, and it is also eaten pickled with bean leaves. Seogwipo-si’s Daejeong (Moseulpo) and Bomok are known as the best places to catch damselfish. Daejeong’s damselfish are big, so they’re good to eat grilled, and Bomok’s damselfish are soft, so it’s popular to cook them in cold sashimi soup or as salad.
Every summer, the “Bomok Damselfish Festival” is held in Bomok. From Bomok town, a place filled with charming calmness, one can see Seopseom Island, Jigwido Island, Munseom Island, and Beomseom Island. Although the festival area, Bomok port, is a great place to experience the view, when you look down from the Paper Mill rising, which is at an altitude of 98m, the sights feel even more magnificent.
The citizens of the area will showcase their great eateries and traditional culture experiences. Starting from the opening ceremony, tourists and citizens can participate in special programs for the festival. There will be activities such as catching top shells, catching damselfish barehanded, and cultural programs such as pulling in tewoo fishing nets. There will also be plenty of things to eat, including grilled damselfish, damselfish salad, and damselfish cold sashimi soup.
