The dense gotjawal forests of Jeju, often called the “lungs of Jeju,” are a site of plentiful underground water; this, along with the geothermal heat released through the rocks, makes the forests warm in the cold winter and cool in the hot summer.
Sanyang Keuneonggot accounts for about 19% of Jeju’s gotjawal forest. The forest is quite unique, as it exists in an overlap between the northern limit of a tropical zone and the southern limit of a subarctic zone, allowing a wide array of diverse plants with varying climate needs to coexist. The trail through the forest is approximately 3.5 km long, with benches along the way to allow for some rest as you explore. The forest contains a number of rarely seen natural features, such as sinkholes, the ruins of old settlements, and deer running across the path. The dense trees provide fresh, pristine air, bringing a sense of peace and relaxation to both body and mind.
